Riel and US dollar in Cambodia

Cambodia uses two currencies side by side. The Khmer riel (KHR) is the official currency, issued by the National Bank of Cambodia, while the US dollar (USD) is widely used for larger payments, rent, salaries and many prices.[1]

How it works day to day

Prices are often shown in dollars, and customers pay with a mix of dollar notes and riel. US coins are not used, so small change is given in riel. The rate used in shops is usually close to 4,000 riel to one dollar, rounded for convenience.

Riel promotion

The National Bank of Cambodia encourages wider use of the riel. Measures have included promoting riel lending and payments, and riel options in the Bakong payment system and KHQR codes.

What it means for businesses

  • Decide whether to price in dollars, riel or both, and show it clearly.
  • Keep enough riel for change.
  • Check the currency and exchange rate in contracts, invoices and tax filings.
  • Accept KHQR payments so customers can pay from any bank app in either currency.
