Building Stronger Instagram Engagement in 2026

Instagram engagement in 2026 is less about publishing as much content as possible and more about creating content people want to watch, share, comment on or respond to. Reels are performing strongly, direct audience interaction is a major engagement tactic, and AI is increasingly being used to analyse performance and speed up content production.

For Cambodian businesses, the practical opportunity is to use these trends as a starting point rather than assuming international data automatically represents Cambodian audiences. HubSpot’s 2026 Instagram Engagement Report surveyed more than 600 Instagram marketing professionals across B2B, B2C and hybrid businesses. The report found that engagement is the leading Instagram marketing goal, Reels rank first across several performance measures, and marketers are increasingly using AI within their Instagram workflows. Instagram in 2026 Is About Engagement, Not Just Posting

HubSpot’s research found that 51% of surveyed Instagram marketers prioritise engagement above other goals. Direct audience interaction was also identified as one of the strongest Instagram tactics for ROI.

This matters because an Instagram account can have many followers without creating meaningful business value. A post that receives comments, shares, saves or direct messages can provide stronger evidence of audience interest than follower growth alone.

For a Cambodian business, the first question should therefore be: what action do we want people to take after seeing our content?

The answer determines what content and measurement make sense.

Reels Should Be a Major Part of Your 2026 Instagram Strategy

Reels are one of the clearest findings in HubSpot’s 2026 report. Reels ranked first for reach, likes, shares and ROI across the metrics measured. HubSpot also reported that Reels adoption increased 71% between 2024 and 2025 among the marketers surveyed.

This does not mean every Cambodian business should abandon images or carousels. The same report found that static images remained the most commonly used format, while B2C marketers were more likely to find image or carousel posts effective in some areas.

The better approach is to give each format a job.

Instagram format Useful role Example for a Cambodian business
Reels Reach, discovery and demonstrations Show a product, service, location or process in action
Stories Ongoing interaction and updates Questions, polls, behind-the-scenes updates and limited offers
Images Clear information and brand presentation Product details, announcements or important information
Carousels Education and detailed explanations Step-by-step guides, comparisons or frequently asked questions

Show the Product or Service Without Making Every Post a Sales Pitch

One of the more useful findings from the report is that product and service content can perform well when it is presented in an engaging way. Forty-six percent of surveyed marketers identified content showcasing their product or service through demonstrations or teasers as the best-performing content type. Educational or informational content followed at 30%, while 26% identified funny content.

The lesson is not to stop promoting your business. It is to change how the promotion is presented.

Instead of creating a video that simply says, “Book our hotel today,” show the room, explain what is included, demonstrate the location or answer a question a guest commonly asks.

Instead of saying, “We provide web development,” show a website interaction, explain one design decision or demonstrate a feature.

For Cambodian businesses, useful content can also be bilingual where the audience requires it. A business serving both local customers and international visitors may use Khmer and English content strategically rather than translating every post word for word.

Authenticity Matters More Than High Production Value

HubSpot’s report argues that brands do not need high production value to create engaging Instagram content. Behind-the-scenes footage, employees speaking on camera, user-generated content and natural short videos can help a brand communicate personality.

This is particularly useful for smaller Cambodian businesses that cannot justify a professional production team for every post.

A hotel could show a staff member preparing a room. A café could show how a drink is prepared. A tour company could show a guide explaining what visitors should know before a trip. A consultancy could show the team working on a real project.

The important distinction is between simple content and careless content. A phone-recorded video can work, but the message should still be clear, relevant and accurate.

Use AI to Make Instagram Work Faster, Not to Remove the Human Element

AI is now part of many Instagram marketing workflows. HubSpot’s 2026 report found that 51% of surveyed marketers use AI to analyse content and campaign performance, while 44% use it for content ideation and 42% use it for captions and copy.

For a small Cambodian marketing team, AI can reduce repetitive work without replacing the person responsible for the brand.

Useful applications include:

AI should not be allowed to invent business information, customer results, prices, reviews or claims. A staff member should check every important piece of published information before it goes live.

Do Not Copy Global Posting Times Without Testing Your Own Audience

HubSpot’s research identified Friday, Saturday and Sunday as strong days in its survey, with particularly strong engagement windows in mornings and evenings. It also identified Thursday evening and Tuesday morning as useful weekday windows.

However, these are not Cambodian engagement benchmarks. HubSpot specifically recommends using each account’s own data because audiences differ by industry, demographics and time zone.

For a Cambodian business, start with your own Instagram Insights. Compare several posting windows and record results for the same type of content.

Test What to compare Useful measurement
Posting time Morning vs evening Views, watch time and engagement
Content format Reels vs carousel vs image Reach, shares, saves and comments
Content topic Educational vs promotional Engagement and enquiries
Call to action Comment vs DM vs website visit Actions completed

Build Conversations Through Comments, DMs and Stories

Posting content is only one part of Instagram engagement. HubSpot found that direct interaction with the audience was one of the tactics producing strong ROI. The report also recommends responding to comments and using interactive Stories to encourage participation.

For businesses in Cambodia, this can be especially useful when Instagram is being used as an enquiry channel. A comment or DM can reveal what customers actually want to know.

Instead of treating comments as something to clear from an inbox, record recurring questions. If several people ask about price, location, availability, delivery, booking requirements or service details, that question can become future content.

This creates a simple loop: customer question → content idea → Instagram post → audience response → better customer information.

Use Instagram Differently at Different Stages of Account Growth

HubSpot’s report suggests that Instagram strategy should change as an account develops. Smaller accounts can focus heavily on consistency, branding and participating in conversations. Once an account has built an audience, partnerships and community engagement become increasingly important.

This means a new Cambodian business should not copy the strategy of a large established brand.

Account stage Priority Practical action
New account Consistency and clarity Establish a recognisable profile, content themes and regular publishing schedule
Growing account Engagement Reply to comments, use Stories and create content that encourages responses
Established account Community and partnerships Collaborate with relevant businesses, creators or organisations
Commercial account Business impact Connect Instagram activity to enquiries, leads, bookings or revenue

Use Organic Content Before Spending More on Ads

HubSpot’s report found that organic Instagram content outperformed paid content across several areas including overall KPIs, reach, engagement and follower growth. Paid content was more competitive for driving leads, with the report finding a tie between organic and paid approaches for that goal.

This supports a practical approach for businesses with limited budgets: learn what content resonates organically before putting significant advertising spend behind it.

For example, a hotel could publish several different room or experience videos organically. If one consistently receives stronger watch time, shares or enquiries, the business can consider using paid promotion to extend its reach.

This is more useful than paying to promote every post equally.

Measure Instagram Against the Business Goal

Instagram should not be judged only by follower count. HubSpot’s report found that marketers track business outcomes including revenue from Instagram efforts, leads or prospects, and sales from in-app purchases.

The correct KPI depends on the business.

For Reels specifically, HubSpot highlights watch time, like rate and send rate as important performance measures. Businesses should combine these platform metrics with the business outcome that matters to them.

What Cambodian Businesses Should Do With Instagram in 2026

The strongest lesson from HubSpot’s 2026 Instagram Engagement Report is not simply “post more Reels”. It is to build an Instagram strategy around engagement, useful content, authentic communication and measurable business outcomes.

  1. Make Reels a significant part of your content mix.
  2. Show products and services through demonstrations rather than constant sales pitches.
  3. Use real people, behind-the-scenes content and customer experiences to make the brand feel human.
  4. Use AI for analysis, planning and repetitive production tasks while keeping human review.
  5. Use Instagram Insights to determine when your Cambodian audience is actually active.
  6. Reply to comments and DMs instead of treating Instagram as a one-way broadcast channel.
  7. Test organic content before allocating larger budgets to paid promotion.
  8. Measure Instagram against enquiries, bookings, leads, sales or another clearly defined business outcome.

Global Instagram research can show where the platform is moving, but it cannot tell a Cambodian hotel, retailer, NGO or SME exactly what its own audience wants. The strongest 2026 strategy is therefore to use the broader data as a starting point, then use your own Instagram Insights, customer conversations and business results to decide what to continue, change or stop.
